Call 911 in an Emergency - 9-1-1 is an emergency number to obtain urgent assistance for any police, fire or medical emergency incident. An emergency is any serious medical problem (chest pain, seizure, bleeding), any type of fire (business, car, building), or any life-threatening situation (fights, person with weapons, vehicle accident with injuries, etc.). You can also use 9-1-1 to report crimes in progress, whether or not a life is threatened.

When to Call 9-1-1

  • To stop a crime
  • To report a fire
  • To save a life

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Wayne County Emergency Communications Division is to provide full service emergency communications and non-emergency support in an efficient and professional manner; while being responsive to the public and the agencies we serve.

This mission is accomplished through a continued focus on excellence and professionalism in providing customer service to meet the urgent and immediate needs of our citizens and partner agencies.

Non-Emergency Numbers for Our Partner Agencies:

Please do not call 9-1-1 for a non-emergency. Instead, dial the agency's listed 7-digit non-emergency telephone number. A non-emergency is one where life or property is not in danger such as theft of property or vandalism. You should also use the non-emergency telephone number for intoxicated persons who are not disorderly, or cars blocking the street or alley. Do not call 9-1-1 to report a power outage - call your electrical utility instead. 9-1-1 dispatchers cannot call a taxi for you - call the cab company directly. Do not call 9-1-1 to check the weather forecast or to find out why emergency sirens are sounding - get an All-Hazard Emergency Alert Radio for your home and business.

Call 2-1-1

Did You Know - Any working cellular phone can call 9-1-1, even if it is not currently in service under a cell phone carrier's contract or service plan? If you call 9-1-1 from an un-initialized phone and your emergency call gets disconnected, you must call the emergency dispatcher back because the dispatcher does not have your telephone number and cannot contact you. Remember, if you give your children an old cell phone to play with, they may be able to call 9-1-1 if the phone is still in working order. Make sure you teach your children when and how to call 9-1-1 or remove the battery.

Tips for Cell Phone Users Calling 9-1-1:

  • Always know your location and be ready to give directions to the 9-1-1 call taker using cross streets, mile markers, landmarks, city and county names.
  • Always know your cell phone number.
  • Tell the 9-1-1 call taker what the emergency is.
  • If your call is disconnected dial 9-1-1 again and let us know you were disconnected.
