Wayne County Mounted Patrol Meeting Minutes

Dec 15th, 1998; 19:00

Location:  Sheriff’s Dept. Conference Room

Present:   George Justice, Alan Moore, Jerry Williams, Bill Bailey, David Barnett, Tom Callahan, Carl Thomas, Bruce Estes, Rudy Toschlog, Bob McGuire

Events:

Christmas Parade – Alan presented a letter that would be given to all parade organizers to make sure we are near the front of any parades we are in.

Next year we could attempt to participate in all the events we did this year.  In addition, neighborhood patrols and participation in “pet therapy”, football games, co-patrolling with other departments, and other such things can be planned out.  Sheriff-Elect Williams expressed his support for these sorts of things

Equipment:

Sgt. Justice and Alan still need to pick out a boot style.

Alan passed around the letter sent to Public Safety explaining what equipment should be issued.

Training:

Sheriff-Elect Williams stressed the importance of nuisance training for next year.

Alan suggested that training for next year consist of a condensed version of the 40 hour course plus topics such as Search and Recovery and First Aid.  He will attempt to come up with a syllabus since most of the group expressed interest.  This training would be done once or twice a month throughout the year.  Additionally, once a month during the Spring/Summer/Fall months nuisance training will continue at the fairgrounds.  The amount of training could determine what classification a member is and help decide what activities (such as neighborhood patrols) a member can participate in.  Sheriff-Elect Williams expressed his support for this type of training.

Sheriff-Elect Williams stated he intended to make Law-Enforcement school available for those that are interested.  He stressed the importance of being trained up to the functions the unit is going to participate in.

For the good of the order:

Everyone should meet Friday Dec 18th at 3:00 p.m. in the clerks office to get sworn in.  You may be in civilian clothes, but you should be here early to get the paperwork.  A letter was passed around to that effect.

Pictures for Sheriff’s Department IDs will be taken Tuesday the 29th at the Reserve Meeting.  Anyone that can’t make that should stop by the Sheriff’s office during business hours and get your picture taken.

David Barnett’s and Tom Callahan have completed weapons training and were able to participate in the Christmas parade.

Sheriff-Elect Williams expressed his support for Reserves and Mounted Patrol officers to be members in other volunteer organizations such as fire departments.  He stressed that common sense should prevail in terms of leaving one assignment for another.

Rudy brought up the question of insurance and Sheriff-Elect Williams said he would look into that.

Alan has sent out requests to other organizations for copies of their by-laws.  Experienced members will look for existing by-laws that have been set up by the unit in the past.  Rob Smoker may have them.

The group approved a Gift Certificate for Terry to the Texas Roadhouse for $50 in appreciation for the training he has done for our newest members.

George will continue as liaison until he dies.

Next meeting:  Third Tuesday of next month, and every third Tuesday thereafter.
